Recipe Instructions

This recipe is for a 1.2kg (1200 g) batch of soap

Base Oils (Total 825 g):

1. Beef or Mutton Tallow – 40% (provides a hard, conditioning bar)

2. Coconut Oil – 26.7% (adds cleansing and lather)

3. Sunflower Oil – 13.3% (gentle and conditioning for the skin)

4. Castor Oil – 13.3% (boosts lather and provides moisturising)

5. Shea Butter – 6.7(nourishing, moisturising, and gentle for acne-prone skin)

Lye Solution:

1. Distilled Water – 25%

2. Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) – 9.26% (carefully measured based on oils to achieve proper saponification)

Additives (Super Beneficial for Acne):

1. Calamine Powder – 40 g (soothing, anti-inflammatory, great for acne)

2. Moringa Powder – 15 g (anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory)

3. Turmeric Powder – 10 g (anti-inflammatory, helps with pigmentation and acne scars)

4. Orange Peel Powder – 15 g (brightens skin, gently exfoliates)

Step-by-Step Process:

1. Prepare the Lye Solution:

In a well-ventilated area, carefully add 133 g of sodium hydroxide (lye) to 320 g of distilled water (never add water to lye, always lye to water). Stir until dissolved. Let the lye solution cool to around 35-40°C.

2. Melt the Oils and Butters:

In a separate pot, gently melt the tallow, coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, and shea butter until fully liquid. Let the oil mixture cool to around 35-40°C as well.

3. Mix the Lye Solution with the Oils:

Once both the lye solution and oils are at the same temperature (35-40°C), slowly pour the lye solution into the oils, mixing gently.

4. Blend Until Trace:

Use a stick blender to blend the mixture until you reach "trace" (a thick, pudding-like consistency where the soap leaves trails on the surface when you lift the blender).

5. Add the Additives:

At trace, add the calamine powder, moringa powder, turmeric powder, and orange peel powder. Stir thoroughly to evenly distribute the powders throughout the mixture.

6. Add Essential Oils (Optional):

7. Pour into the Mold:

Pour the soap mixture into a prepared mould, smoothing the top with a spatula.

8. Cure the Soap:

Let the soap stay in the mould for 24-48 hours. Once it's firm enough, remove it from the mould and cut it into bars.

Cure the bars for 4-6 weeks in a well-ventilated space, turning them occasionally to ensure even curing. The longer they cure, the milder the soap will be.

Tips:

Handling Lye: Always wear gloves, and goggles, and work in a ventilated area when handling lye.

Soap Mold: Use silicone moulds or a lined loaf pan for easy removal.

Curing Time: Make sure to allow the soap to cure for the full period to ensure it's mild and safe for use on acne-prone skin.

This recipe should result in a firm, cleansing bar with ingredients that are soothing, anti-inflammatory, and beneficial for acne-prone skin.
